Day
1 Sunday, June 26, 2005 Baltimore to Atlanta Miles: 670 Sunday 1:24 a.m. Finally finished packing. Somehow consolidating a combined 50 years worth of stuff into 16 boxes took longer than expected. Moved into our new home (2005 Ford Focus). Said goodbye to the old apartment, turned in the keys and hit the road. Should make it to Atlanta in 12 hours. Sunday 2:20 a.m. Stopped for food at the Silver Diner in Greenbelt. Two orders of spinach wonton mozzarella sticks, a large coffee and a tuna sandwich for the cat. It’s the first time either of us had that coffee in years and it’s still the same. Thought it quite appropriate to end our time in b-more together the way we began it more than six years ago – unexpectedly staying up all night drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes and laughing our asses off. Sunday 5:24 a.m. First attempt at a rest stop. Virginia mile marker 56. Couldn’t decipher the shoelace code of the skinheads. Decided to drive another 23 miles for a safer…er..passage. Sunday 10:35 a.m. Just passed the marker on 27 hours no sleep. We’ve made it to South Carolina – 514 miles. Highlights of the trip so far – kudzu, a giant peach, signs for $7.00 cartons of cigarettes. Things are only getting better. Sunday 1:15 pm. Chamblee, Georgia just a few miles outside of Atlanta. Motel 6, pizza, sleep. Eva has lodged herself in the boxspring. The room is clean enough, but still feels a little shady - like Pat O'Brien or Marv Albert was here the night before. Very happy to be off of the road, it was starting to look like the pic below. Tomorrow - New Orleans. |
