Day 4
Wednesday , June 29, 2005
Houston to San Antonio
Miles: 234

12:15 pm
Back on I-10...only 700 more miles on this road. Nice short drive ahead today. We originally planned to do another 12-hour day from Houston to Carlsbad, but decided to take it easy instead. The Texas sky is truly awe inspiring.

2:15 pm
Seeing signs every few miles for "Natural Bridge Caverns, Just follow the signs!" for quite a while now. We decide to check it out.

2:45 pm
This is starting to feel like a wild goose chase. Driven almost 30 miles, still following signs. The signs, of course, never give the actual distance to the Caverns, only the distance to the next turn.

3:00 pm
Forty miles later...the parking lot is packed, the next tour doesn't start for an hour. Decided to check out the "Wildlide Ranch" instead. It was too late when we realized that it was also advertised as a Self-Guided-Drive-Thru-Texas-Style-African-Safari. Would have turned around if we had known - but the money was already paid. Let's go see some animals. (Click here for video)

The animals seem happy enough. Healthy, plenty of space to roam.

The only issue is how conditioned they are to come to the pasing cars for food. We declined the bag of feed they offer at the front gates and still...

8:00 pm
Heading to downtown San Antonio for some good food.

8:15 pm
Hello San Antonio!

8:45 pm
Now we remember why we're here.

9:00 pm
Anyone ever heard of the Riverwalk in San Antonio? Recomended by th lovely Lisa Rockefeller, this is definitely one of the coolest surprises on the trip so far. The city seems to be built up about 20 feet or so above the river, which is only about 20-30 feet wide in most spots. The walk is lined with cafes, bars, restaurants and bridges to cross every so often.
