Day
8 Sunday, July 3, 2005 Santa Fe to Flagstaff Miles: 423 ![]() 11:30 pm Back on the road. Once again, in an attempt to avoid Albuquerque (and to get our kicks), we hop off the interstate onto Rte 66. ![]() 3:15pm Arizona ![]() 4:10pm Petrified Forest National Park, which also contains the Painted Desert. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 4:50pm 3,000 miles and counting ![]() 6:30pm Stand on the corner...don't eat the food. This isn't New Mexico, you can't just stop and eat anywhere and expect it to be good. Ordered a veggie burrito (tossed salad in flour tortilla...what, no rice and beans?) and a carne asada burrito. Here, "asada" means "uncooked." ![]() 10:00 pm NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft, launched in January of this year, released a second "impactor" rocket that is scheduled to crash into the comet Tempel-1 tonight at 10:52pm...give or take a few seconds. In a stroke of genius, we find the local observatory and head up into the hills. 10:53 pm No explosion, no fury unleashed...but the city and sky are beautiful from up here. A perfect chance to play with time exposures on the digital cameras. ![]() ![]() |
