Friday, July 1, 2005
Carlsbad to Santa Fe
Miles: 396

7:00 am
Free breakfast with hotel room. "Present this coupon to your waitres" ...and eat as much as you want!

8:30 am
Left the hotel super early and made it to Carlsbad Caverns National Park by 9 o'clock.

There's not much that can be said about the beauty here and the pictures don't do it justice.

Knowing that you are able to witness a place that is so magnificent on it's own - without any influence from (wo)man is humbling to say the least.

3:00 pm
Roswell...hot.

Though a bit out of the way, we decided to stay in Santa Fe instead of Albuquerque. Unknowingly, this was the best decision we've made so far. Highlights from the Albuquerque 11:00 News:
  • Meth Lab Busted
  • Baby tests positive for marijuana - parents test negative
  • 3 Cops arrested for DUI
  • Pit bull found stabbed and hanging from a tree
  • Air unsafe - stay inside
  • Traffic so bad, drivers have taken to crossing construction zones in lieu of paying any mind to traffic laws or basic road safety
So...while avoiding Albuquerque at all costs, this train ain't stopping 'til it gets to Santa Fe!

Instead of the Interstate through Albuquerque, we took an out of the way scenic route, Rte 14, the Turquoise Hwy, had a drink with a lovely woman who's family has been here since 1742 and discovered the remnants of a hippie town, Madrid, which well go back and visit tomorrow.
